Tartan Yachts: One of the top cruising/club racing sailboats of the last 40 years. These boats are very hard to find because they are loved by their owners. The original workmanship provides a base to extend the life of these boats through today and into the future. Solid performance and ease of handling make these boats a joy to race or take the whole family on extended cruises. The Challenger has seen many trips up and down the east coast. Anchoring in Newport, Martha's Vineyard, Barnegat Bay, Eastern Bay, Moon River, Charleston and Stuart, Florida.
The Tartan 37 sailboat was designed by Sparkman & Stephens. Tartan Yachts produced 486 of these classic boats from 1976 through 1988, and most are still sailing today.
Challenger was purchased from Tartan factory in 1987. At that time she was three years old and has been owned by the current Seller for the past 25 years. Over the years she has had constant care and maintence including a complete bottom job. No blisters on this Tartan.
Engine was replaced in 1991 and upgraded. Original engine was a
Westerbeke 38 HP. Replacement is a Westerbeke 42HP. Replaced at the
Hinkley yard in Newport, RI. Note the prop is oversized and also
includes a folding two blade prop for racing.
There is extensive storage space in
the main salon behind each of those small back cushions on port and
starboard bunks. Also major storage available in the v-berth on the starboard side
under the bunk. There is a very big space behind the seat at the chart table. Up forward in the vberth is the anchor locker. It has about
80 feet of chain + at least 100 feet of line.

The Tartan 37 is a popular shoal draft cruiser designed by Sparkman and Stevens, suitable for coastal sailing or club racing. The hull has a modified fin keel with centerboard and skeg-hung rudder. V-berth with filler cushion forward, with shelves, bureau and hanging lockers. In the salon to port, there is an L-shaped dinette with bulkhead mounted dining table. To starboard there is a straight settee with pilot berth outboard above. The large nav station with chart table is aft to port; the U-shaped galley is opposite.
Capacities: Fuel ~40 gals; Water 70+35 gals; CNG 3 cylinders (normally carry two)
Standard mast height of 52' 00". Cape May, NJ bridges are fine except for spring tides.
History
Family owned since 1987. Resided Mobile, AL before 1987. Purchased from Tartan in Ohio in 1987.
Used for a little bit of racing in NJ - Barnegat Bay; Atlantic City. Several trips to Bahamas and Florida.
Berthed part of the year (and currently) in Chesapeake Bay, Chester, MD 21619.
Documented with Coast Guard National Vessel Documentation Center. Currently registered in NJ.
